A Southern African Experience: Cape Town, Waterberg, Victoria Falls

Last month, Laura joined a famil hosted by Dragonfly Africa and invited by DMS. Over eight days, the group travelled through Cape Town, the Waterberg Biosphere and Victoria Falls in Zambia. The itinerary was designed to highlight the destination’s incentive potential, and it delivered on every front. This region offers variety, impact and the kinds of once-in-a-lifetime memories that live well beyond the trip.

Cape Town: Where Rugged Beauty Meets Reward Potential

Cape Town made an immediate impression. Framed by Table Mountain and surrounded by dramatic coastline, the city pulses with energy while offering high-end restaurants, boutique shopping and waterfront venues. It is adventurous but accessible, stylish but relaxed. Ideal for incentive travel.

Highlights included:

  • Swapping standard coaches for open jeeps and heading to Chapman’s Peak for hot chocolates (with a splash of Amaretto), canapés and a jaw-dropping view over the Atlantic Ocean
  • Spotting penguins at Boulders Beach, with crystal-clear waters and a sense of magic in every step
  • Wine tasting at Tokara and Haute Cabrière, where exceptional local wines and mountain scenery created a welcome shift of pace
  • A memorable dinner at One&Only Cape Town, where fine dining and flawless service proved that food can be the anchor of a standout incentive program

For accommodation, the group stayed at:

  • Victoria & Alfred Hotel – located on the V&A Waterfront, this former 1904 warehouse combines heritage and modern design with harbour and Table Mountain views
  • The Winchester Hotel – set on Sea Point promenade, this Cape Dutch-style hotel delivers bold interiors and a vibrant setting by the coast

Cape Town balances natural spectacle with hospitality infrastructure and a strong sense of place. For Australian groups, it’s a destination that feels both exciting and easy to navigate.

Waterberg Biosphere: A Safari Experience with Stillness

Flying north, the group entered the Waterberg Biosphere – a UNESCO-protected wilderness of mountains, rivers and open plains. The contrast with Cape Town was immediate. Where the city buzzes, the Waterberg is still. Safari experiences unfolded at a slower pace, offering time to take it all in.

Highlights included:

  • Twice-daily game drives, where elephants, lions and rhinos appeared against glowing sunsets
  • Time to feel the stillness of the bush, where the only sound was the crunch of tyres on red earth

The Waterberg offers a conservation-led safari experience that is ideal for groups seeking deeper connection and a strong sense of reward. For the Australian market, where safari often sits high on the bucket list, this part of the program delivered transformation and perspective.

Victoria Falls, Zambia: A Grand Finale of Nature and Culture

The final stop was Victoria Falls in Zambia, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya – the smoke that thunders. The scale, power and beauty of the Falls were matched only by the warmth and rhythm of the local culture.

Experiences included:

  • Seeing the Falls up close, with rainbows forming in the mist and the sound of water echoing across the gorge
  • A scenic helicopter flight, revealing the full scale of the landscape from above
  • Long-table dining under festoon lights Under the Monkey Tree
  • Feeding elephants at The Elephant Café, followed by a gourmet meal overlooking the Zambezi River
  • A visit to Simoonga Thandizani Trust School, where the group connected with local students and saw the real value of incorporating meaningful CSR into incentive programs
  • Boarding the Royal Livingstone Express for sunset drinks on the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with traditional dancers and the thunder of the Falls below

The group stayed at The Royal Livingstone, a heritage-style property on the banks of the Zambezi River. With its colonial charm, private entrance to the Falls and riverside setting, it was a fitting end to the trip.

Final Thoughts

For Australian incentive planners, this famil proved that Southern Africa is more than just one destination. It is a layered experience, where each region builds on the next.

  • Cape Town offers premium hospitality, vibrant culture and a sense of contrast that keeps delegates engaged.
  • Waterberg delivers a grounding safari experience that feels personal, purposeful and authentic.
  • Victoria Falls closes the program with high emotion, natural wonder and cultural rhythm.

Every element of this itinerary was designed to deliver moments that move people; from logistical ease and scenic backdrops to conservation-led impact and meaningful connection. Southern Africa is a region ready for high-end, experience-driven incentive programs that reward, inspire and stay with people long after they return home.
