Board with Bex: Canada, but not as you know it
Welcome back to Board with Bex…
Where Bex shares the places you think you know, but that still hold a few surprises. Next up… Canada.
Canada is big. Properly big.
It’s the kind of destination where one trip can take you from the middle of a buzzing city to glacial lakes, mountain passes, wildlife and stretches of wilderness that make you feel very small, very quickly.
And that’s exactly why it has always been one of Bex’s favourites.
From living in Toronto to leading an incentive through the Rockies
Bex first got to know Canada while living in Toronto, experiencing the city beyond the usual highlights and getting a feel for the pace, personality and culture of the place.
Later, she returned in a very different capacity, this time leading an incentive group through some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes.
The programme stretched across three weeks and, in true Canada fashion, covered a lot of ground.
There was Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf through the Rockies, a seven night Inside Passage cruise and a bucket list that became fairly ridiculous fairly quickly.
Jetboating.
Scenic helicopter flights.
Ziplining.
Husky sledding.
Bear watching.
Basically, Canada refusing to do anything by halves.
The big moments are only half the story
For all the adventure, though, the moments that stayed with Bex weren’t necessarily the loudest ones.
There was the stillness of Lake Louise.
Those long stretches through the Rockies where everyone goes a little quiet because there isn’t much you can say that improves the view.
And the Fairmont hotels scattered throughout the journey, where some of Canada’s most iconic landscapes somehow come with a very comfortable bed, a good meal and a glass of wine at the end of the day.
That contrast is a huge part of Canada’s appeal.
One minute it’s helicopters, huskies and adrenaline.
The next, it’s sitting somewhere completely still, looking out at a lake that barely seems real.
Why Canada works so well for incentive travel
For incentive groups, that variety gives planners a lot to work with.
Canada can feel adventurous without losing the luxury. It can deliver the big, bucket list moments people expect from an incentive trip, while still leaving room for slower experiences, incredible food, beautiful hotels and genuine time together.
It also means a programme doesn’t need to rely on one hero moment.
A train journey can become part of the experience. A transfer through the mountains can feel like an event in itself. A quiet afternoon beside a lake can be just as memorable as the helicopter flight the day before.
And because the scenery, activities and pace can change so dramatically from one day to the next, the journey keeps unfolding.
For groups, that matters.
You’re not simply taking people somewhere beautiful. You’re giving them experiences they probably wouldn’t organise for themselves, and stories they’ll still be telling when everyone is back at their desks.
More than a postcard
Canada is easy to picture.
Mountains. Lakes. Snow. Wildlife.
But being there is different.
It’s the scale of it. The quiet. The moments where the scenery does most of the talking. And the way one journey can move between complete adrenaline and complete stillness without either feeling out of place.
That’s what makes it more than a great holiday destination.
For incentive travel, it gives you the ingredients to create something genuinely memorable, with enough adventure to excite people, enough luxury to make it feel special and enough space for the destination itself to do some of the work.
And Canada has quite a few stories up its sleeve.
That’s what Board with Bex is about.
Going beyond the postcard. Finding the experiences that make a destination stick. And understanding why some places are made for more than just a holiday.
