Board with Bex: India, Between the Chaos

Board with Bex is about sharing the destinations you think you know, and uncovering the layers most people never see.

Led by Bex, the quiet force behind every seamless Mavel journey, this series draws on more than 20 years of travel experience across 63 countries. It’s not about ticking places off a list. It’s about understanding why some destinations stay with you long after you’ve left.

Next up… India.

The India Everyone Imagines

India is one of those destinations people think they already understand before they arrive.

The colour. The noise. The crowded markets. The endless movement. It’s often described as chaotic, overwhelming, vibrant and intense… and all of those things are true.

But they’re also only part of the story.

Bex spent eight weeks travelling slowly through India, moving between cities by train and private drivers, allowing space for the country to unfold gradually rather than rushing from one landmark to the next.

And what stayed with her most wasn’t necessarily the highlights.

It was everything in between.

The Moments You Can’t Plan For

Some of the most memorable experiences happened far away from the major tourist sites.

Quiet moments spent in family homes. Time in villages working alongside local schools and communities. Long conversations that crossed language barriers. The kind of experiences that don’t always make it onto itineraries, but often become the ones you remember most clearly.

Then there was Goa.

Not the version people expect, but a slower, calmer side where the beaches still felt untouched and time stretched longer than anticipated. Days became less about plans and more about simply being there.

And then there were the moments no one could have predicted. Like somehow ending up in a Bollywood film in Mumbai, an experience that still feels slightly surreal when retold now.

That’s India. It constantly shifts between the expected and the completely unexpected.

Beyond the Comfort Zone

India also has a way of pushing people slightly beyond what feels familiar.

For Bex, that looked like overnight camping in the desert with a camel for company. Time spent in an ashram in Northern India, leaning into yoga, meditation and a few spiritual discoveries along the way. And then the Ganges, where she took part in a holy ceremony that required bathing in the river first.

An experience that felt equal parts deeply meaningful and “I cannot believe I’m actually doing this.”

Those are often the moments that change a journey from memorable to transformative.

Not because they’re polished or comfortable, but because they ask you to participate fully in the place around you.

Chaos, Calm and Everything In Between

India doesn’t reward rushing.

It reveals itself slowly.

One moment you’re navigating a crowded market filled with colour, sound and movement. The next, you’re somewhere completely still, watching sunrise over a quiet landscape with no one else around.

It’s that constant contrast between chaos and calm that makes India what it is.

And it’s also the part people don’t always talk about.

Because India isn’t a destination you simply visit. It’s one you sit with. One you move through gradually. One that teaches you very quickly that you will never fully understand it in a single trip.

And maybe that’s the point.

Why This Matters

For travellers, brands and planners alike, India is a reminder that the most meaningful experiences are rarely the easiest ones.

They’re the experiences that challenge perspective.

The ones that stay with you.

The ones that leave a mark long after you’ve returned home.

Travel is shifting away from simply collecting destinations and towards seeking experiences with depth, connection and story. India embodies that perfectly because it refuses to be simplified into one version of itself.

It’s layered. Complex. Beautiful. Grounding. And unforgettable.
