Think You Know Japan? Think Again.

Far from the neon lights of Tokyo and the postcard-perfect temples of Kyoto lies a side of Japan that’s slower, wilder, and far less travelled – the islands of Okinawa and one of the jewels of the islands: Miyako-jima.

Recently, Laura from our team set off to explore this part of the world and came back with stories, sunshine, and more than a few secret spots we think brands should be paying attention to.

Miyako-jima: Japan’s Best-Kept Secret

Let’s start with Miyako-jima, one of the southernmost islands in the Okinawa chain, and hands down one of the clearest-watered places we’ve ever laid eyes on. Think:

  • Swimming with sea turtles straight from the shore
  • Untouched beaches with barely another person in sight
  • A bridge so beautifully designed it could be a destination in its own right

The vibe here is slow. This is your beer-in-hand, toes-in-the-sand kind of place. While the culinary scene still leans towards the resort-style basics, there’s something lovely about the paddock-to-plate simplicity at some of the independently owned restaurants. At Blue Turtle, tomatoes are picked fresh from their own farm, bringing island life to every bite.

Okinawa Island: Where Culture and Comfort Collide

If Miyako-jima is barefoot bliss, Okinawa Island is its cool, collected older sibling. While more populated than expected i the city areas, this island offers a unique balance between raw natural beauty and refined cultural experiences.

Take Halekulani Okinawa, for instance — the hotel Laura stayed at. It’s award-winning for a reason. Exceptional service, pristine beaches at every turn, and a restaurant offering that punches well above its weight.

But the real gem? A wagyu omakase experience run by a daughter and her 85-year-old father in their home. With only 20 seats and every course explained as it’s prepared in front of you, it was hospitality at its finest.

Why It Matters for Brands

If your brand is looking to build an incentive, activation, or content trip that stands out — this is where the magic happens. These islands offer:

  • Scenery that stops you in your tracks
  • Genuine hospitality and storytelling potential
  • A sense of discovery that feels fresh, not forced

Whether it’s an exclusive content campaign in Miyako-jima, or a luxury food-focused reward program in Okinawa, these islands have the power to leave a lasting impression.
